Health Net Federal Services Hosts Month-Long Colorectal Cancer Awareness Campaign among Military Communities

Regular screening may help to prevent colorectal cancer

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Health Net Federal Services, LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Health Net, Inc. (NYS: HNT) , today announced its month-long colorectal cancer campaign throughout March to raise awareness of the importance of colorectal screenings in the effort to help prevent colon and rectal cancers among individuals 50 years of age and above in military communities.

Health Net Federal Services' goal is to increase the number of beneficiaries in the TRICARE® North Region who obtain colorectal cancer screenings.

"At Health Net Federal Services we understand preventive health care is critical to overall well-being. This month we are proud to join national organizations across the country to raise awareness of the importance of colorectal cancer screenings within the military community," said Tom Carrato, president, Health Net Federal Services. "TRICARE covers routine colorectal cancer screenings at no cost to TRICARE beneficiaries when they see a network provider. We are proud to help make preventive screenings, such as the colorectal cancer screening, easily accessible to those we serve."

According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in men and women in the United States, excluding skin cancers. As part of its campaign, Health Net Federal Services wants to raise awareness of the importance of colorectal cancer screenings, which can help to prevent colorectal cancer by finding polyps before they turn into cancer. If colorectal cancer is diagnosed during a screening, it is highly curable when detected early.

While many people do not experience symptoms from polyps or colorectal cancer, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identify the following symptoms individuals may have:

  • Blood in or on stool

  • Stomach pain, aches or cramps that don't go away

  • Unexplained weight loss

The campaign is scheduled to kick off with the Colon Cancer Alliance's national Dress in Blue Day and will feature resources, events, the story of a colorectal cancer survivor, webinars, provider education and more.
