Comtech EF Data Announced Today That the Pending DVB-CID Standard Is Based Largely on Its MetaCarrier® Technology

TEMPE, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Comtech EF Data Corporation announced today that the pending DVB-CID ETSI TS 103 129 standard for combating satellite interference is based on its award-winning MetaCarrier® technology. Satellite interference has a significant financial impact on both satellite operators and end users. Comtech EF Data developed the MetaCarrier technology to address this severe, industry-wide challenge. This standard will directly benefit users and operators in the avoidance of accidental interference.

The MetaCarrier technology embeds and detects a small message and unique ID within a video or data satellite carrier. This embedded message and ID significantly reduce the time to identify and clear interference sources. The MetaCarrier is embedded using spread spectrum techniques within the carrier itself without adding appreciable noise or power to the host carrier. The robust spread spectrum signal enables the host carrier to be identified even when the host carrier is well below another carrier or near the noise floor itself.

"We are pleased that our spread spectrum techniques will benefit the industry at large," commented Frederick Morris, vice president sales engineering for Comtech EF Data. "The adoption of Carrier ID will enable users and operators to resolve interference events more rapidly, while reducing the personnel dedicated to interference mitigation, towards the goal of increased service quality."

The MetaCarrier technology is already integrated in select Comtech EF Data products, including the DM240XR Digital Video Broadcast Modulator and the MCDD-100 MetaCarrier Detecting Device. Support for DVB-CID ETSI TS 103 129 will be offered for the DM240XR and the MCDD-100 via software updates.

The DM240XR Digital Video Broadcast Modulator is ideally suited for broadcast applications. The core hardware is dependable and provides the flexibility needed to support growing demands of service providers. The Modulator offers data rates up to 238 Mbps, QPSK, 8PSK, 16-QAM, 16APSK, 32APSK modulation, selectable output frequency of 70/140 MHz or L-Band operation with hardware modifications, and an agile IF output from 50-90 MHz, 100-180 MHz and 950-2050 MHz in 100 Hz steps.

The MCDD-100 MetaCarrier Detecting Device uses spread spectrum technology for decoding and demodulating the MetaCarrier sequence. Most commonly utilized by satellite operators and teleports, the MCDD-100 is intended to help reduce interference in satellite carrier transmission.
