Healthx Case Study Reveals 50% Cost Reduction

INDIANAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Healthx recently published a case study following a pilot program with Southeastern Indiana Health Organization (SIHO). The study explored the cost savings associated with eliminating paper Explanation of Benefits (EOB) statements.

Since many health insurance companies and third party administrators are feeling the numbers crunch, going paperless EOB is one line item that has received particular attention. Healthx estimates that the sheer number of printed and distributed EOBs can cost an average of 50 cents per EOB.

SIHO partnered with Healthx to conduct a voluntary EOB pilot study with 120 SIHO members. Healthx utilized enhanced portal technologies and an engaging marketing campaign to drive user adoption. Within 90 days, SIHO quickly realized a 57% user adoption rate and a 50% cost reduction by going to paperless EOB.

Other valuable insights from the study include:

  • Once paperless, SIHO saw a reduction of more than 6,000 paper statements representing 68 members.

  • End-of-Study Survey revealed a 98% positive feedback response, which members said it was easy to sign-up for Paperless EOB and creating an online portal ID; taking less than five minutes.

  • The paperless EOB campaign drove more members to SIHO's portal, which increased portal adoption.

  • Key factors to user adoption included portal technology with splash screens and prompters, a personalized email campaign, incentives and an effortless sign-up process.

"We are thrilled that SIHO realized a substantial savings in such a short time," says Greg Bell, president of Healthx. "Developing effective communication strategies that can truly drive user adoption is core to our DNA."

SIHO and Healthx plan to conduct a second phase to SIHO's Paperless EOB program. Healthx looks forward to releasing more statistics and insights demonstrating what Paperless EOBs can offer the health insurance industry.
