Carter Phillips Assumes Role as Chair of Sidley's Executive Committee

CHICAGO, NEW YORK, WASHINGTON, D.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Sidley Austin LLP is pleased to announce that Carter G. Phillips this week has moved into his position as Chair of the firm's Executive Committee after having served as co-chair with Thomas A. Cole during a one-year transition period. Mr. Cole, who held the role of chair of the firm for 15 years, has stepped down from the position and continues his active legal practice as well as his role as a member of the firm's Management and Executive Committees.

"It has been an honor to work side-by-side with Tom Cole as a co-chair for the past year and I look forward to working closely with Chuck Douglas this year in helping to guide this wonderful law firm forward," Phillips observed. "I am extremely fortunate to have a practice that I enjoy as much as I do and that will continue while being able to help manage a global institution that never ceases to amaze me with its accomplishments."

Mr. Phillips will continue his active appellate practice while in this management role, which is the time-honored tradition of leadership at Sidley. For example, this week he is arguing on behalf of several of the nation's largest railroads in a multi-billion dollar antitrust case before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. He has argued 76 cases before the Supreme Court, more than any other lawyer in private practice. He also has argued more than 100 cases in other appellate courts. The National Law Journal this year named him one of the "100 Most Influential Lawyers in America."

"Carter's exceptional accomplishments as one of the nation's most prominent appellate lawyers combined with the bold leadership he provided for 17 years in his role as managing partner of our Washington, D.C. office make him ideally suited to lead Sidley forward," said Charles W. Douglas, Chair of the firm's Management Committee. "We've worked closely together on the Management Committee for years and I look forward to continuing to work with him in his new role."

With approximately 1,750 lawyers in 18 offices worldwide, Sidley has built a reputation as a premier legal advisor for global businesses and financial institutions.
