Questions surround death of Colorado wrestler

At first, it appeared that a superstar college wrestler at Western State Colorado University had taken his own life. But now, some wonder if Dammion Heard actually committed suicide.

KCNC says Heard went missing earlier this month. Five days later his body was found not far from campus. Police said he committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree.

And while Gunnison police originally said no suspects were being pursued, an investigation into his death is still open. His parents told "Good Morning America" they were skeptical from the start. "Good Morning America" reports:

"His parents say their son's phone records indicate he planned on meeting a girl in the morning following his disappearance ... His parents also say they were told by police their son was involved in a fight the night before his death."

WFAA spoke to Gary Heard: "Always upbeat, never had any issues with depression, anxiety ... It all just seemed really fishy."

As seen on YouTube, the Texas native won a state wrestling championship his senior year in high school, which helped him earn a scholarship to college. As a freshman at Western State he had a successful start on the varsity team.

Colorado Newsday reports the Western State Colorado interim president said, "Dammion was a vibrant and beloved member of the campus community, a great student and an accomplished athlete."

Heard's parents say they plan on hiring an attorney and investigators to explore their concerns. The family is still awaiting full toxicology results.
