Good Samaritan pays off student lunch accounts

Good Samaritan Ryan Cox of Indianapolis decided to step up his game and pay off all the overdue lunch accounts of students at a local elementary school.

'Ryan went on social media and he raised nearly $1,000 in five days and paid off the whole school's balance of $1,200.'

WTHR spoke with both Cox and Lakeside Elementary School's cafeteria supervisor Latiousha Smith about how the whole deal went down.

SMITH: 'He was like, 'You know, I just want to come and pay someone's balance.' And I was like, 'Okay, so what's your student's name?''

COX: 'I said, 'Well I have a few nephews who go there but their accounts aren't delinquent. I just want to pay random accounts.''

SMITH: And I said 'Are you sure?''

Needless to say, Smith was stunned.

Cox wrote on his blog that he was inspired to pay off the lunch accounts after a friend told him she had paid off 12 accounts at her daughter's school because kids were apparently refusing to eat lunch since they were too embarrassed to eat the lunch that's provided for kids with no money in their accounts.

And Cox is no stranger to giving back. He often pays for people's orders at his local Starbucks.

He chronicled one of these purchases in a Facebook post, saying, 'I don't care if your Starbucks order was $10.25 lady I'll never meet, the pleasure was all mine. Not a better feeling in the world than paying it forward.'

And Cox has other good deeds planned for 2014 as well. He wrote on his blog that his goal is to donate 200 hours of his time to charity and adopt four families this Christmas.
