A heavy hitter has a heavy heart.

New York Yankees slugger Carlos Beltran and his family are grieving the loss of their unborn son to a miscarriage. His wife Jessica was about four months into her pregnancy.

The 37-year-old made the announcement on his Facebook page, writing in Spanish, "Life took away the blessing of having my first boy. I believe in god and I am thankful for all his many blessings, like my beautiful family, friends, fans, and career. Everything happens and will happen according to god's perfect timing and my wife and I accept it that way. Thank you for all the love and messages."

The outfielder left the team Tuesday to be by his wife's side.

Teammate and Yankee Captain Derek Jeter says the tragedy really puts things into perspective. He said, "We're here, we're playing a game and we're trying to win games, but the bottom line, family is much more important than anything that happens on a baseball field. Your thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family, but that's terrible. I feel bad for him."

Carlos and Jessica Beltran have two young girls; six year old Ivana and two year old Kiara.
