A family member has confirmed that Oscar de la Renta has died at the age of 82, according to CNN. The legendary fashion designer was diagnosed with cancer in 2006, ABC News reports, though the official cause of death is not yet known.

De la Renta was born in the Dominican Republic in 1932 and rose to fame when he began designing for Jacqueline Kennedy and launched his own label in the 1960s. The fashion icon has since designed for a slew of first ladies, including Betty Ford, Laura Bush and Michelle Obama.

He spent the better part of a century designing evening gowns and other high fashion garments in New York City, according to New York Magazine. He most recently designed Amal Clooney's wedding dress.

Earlier this month de la Renta appointed Peter Copping as the new creative director of the Oscar de la Renta brand.
