Pope Francis is known to call and comfort people he has heard are suffering, and when he does, he greets them with, "Hello, I'm Pope Francis." But getting a call like that could catch you by surprise.

Last week an Italian man hung up on the pope twice after thinking he was being pranked, the Vatican newspaper l'Osservatore Romano reported.

When the pope called again on the third try, Franco Rabuffi finally believed the call.

Rabuffi, who apologized to the pontiff, had been sick and Pope Francis was calling him to ask about his health.

To Rabuffi's relief, Pope Francis thought the entire interaction was amusing.

According to Sky News Rabuffi told l'Osservatore Romano, "I was speechless, but Francis came to my rescue, saying that what happened was funny..."

He also apologized to the pope in person during the Vatican's general audience in St. Peter's Square on Wednesday.
