The first trailer for Concussion, the sports drama that shines a spotlight on the controversial issue of head traumas suffered by former NFL players, is out and it holds little back.

Starring Will Smith as Dr. Bennet Omalu, Concussion follows the story of ex-pros such as Dave Duerson (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) and Andre Waters (Richard T. Jones) who both suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a neurodegenerative disease, after long hard careers in the NFL.

Directed by Peter Landesman, Concussion is based on GQ magazine's "Game Brain" by Jeanne Marie Laskas.

The film stars Luke Wilson as NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, and Albert Brooks and Alec Baldwin as doctors who worked with Dr Omalu.

Produced by Columbia Pictures, Concussion hits theaters on Dec. 25.
