Jennifer Aniston 'didn't want to announce' split from Justin Theroux 'for as long as possible'

When Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux met up "one last time" before their split last week, they weren't in total agreement over how to handle their separation.

According to a new People report, the former couple "saw each other late at night on Valentine's Day in L.A." last week, one day before taking their breakup news public through a joint statement on Thursday night.

"They decided together that they would make the announcement the next day," a source told People. "Justin flew on a private jet to L.A. to see Jen one last time."

But, echoing reports that the stars were more different than they were alike, Aniston allegedly didn't even want to announce their split to the public, despite the fact that the couple had reportedly been broken up since the end of last year.

"Jen didn't want to announce it for as long as possible," the source added. "She wanted to avoid the media attention."

"But that's not Justin's style," the insider contended. "He wanted to make the announcement so he can live his life."

And Theroux has definitely been living his life over the past several months, much of it without Aniston by his side. Insiders close to the couple revealed that the couple have been spending most of their time on opposite coasts -- with Aniston in Los Angeles -- a city she has "grown more attached to" -- and Theroux in New York, a city he has "always" loved.

It's that specific divide that created an unsolvable issue in their two-year marriage.

"It seems Justin gave up many months ago," the People source explained. "For the past few months, he has spent very little time in L.A. Jen very recently started telling people that they were over. She seems okay now, but was still hoping as of a few weeks ago that they could figure things out."

Theroux and Aniston had been together since 2011, three years after they first met on the set of "Tropic Thunder." They wed in a 2015 ceremony at their Bel-Air mansion, though rumors swirled over the weekend that the ceremony was more symbolic -- TMZ couldn't find any official records proving that they were legally married.
