Updated

As fans continue to try to make sense of Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux's unexpected split announced last week, insiders close to the former couple are revealing new information about their seven-year romance.

One aspect of their relationship that the public has been unsure about is whether or not they had plans to have children and start a family together -- and, according to a new report in People, they did indeed try to have kids.

"When Jen met Justin, she had almost given up on the idea that she would have kids," an Aniston insider said. "They wanted to have a baby, but it didn't work out."

Theroux and Aniston met on the set of "Tropic Thunder" back in 2007, but didn't start seeing each other romantically until years later. They got engaged in 2012.

Though having children together didn't work out for still-private reasons, Aniston didn't let it get her down too much.

"She has been sad that it never happened," the source continued. "But it never consumed her."

As for what led to their breakup, multiple reports have pointed to differing lifestyles as being the ultimate deal-breaker for the couple. Theroux was tied to his life in New York City, while Aniston had grown increasingly attached to their Bel-Air mansion and life in Los Angeles.

"They didn't really fight," a source told People. "They just did things separately."
