Fox 2 Detroit meteorologist Jessica Starr commits suicide at 35

Jessica Starr, a meteorologist for Detroit’s Fox 2 news, committed suicide Wednesday. She was 35.

Her colleagues shared the “heartbreaking” news to Twitter Thursday, noting they learned of her death the night before.

“All of us here are in shock and cannot believe such a wonderful, bright and intelligent individual will no longer be with us,” the tweet read.

Starr, a Michigan native, received meteorology degrees from Michigan State University and Mississippi State University, and worked at stations in Baltimore and Lansing before landing at Fox 2.

She underwent Lasik eye surgery in October and was forced to take time off of work, a struggle she addressed in a Facebook video in early November.

“I’m still healing… (but) I’m ready to get back to my life,” she said, noting that doctors told her it would take about three months before she felt 100% again.

Her final tweet came one day later, when she explained that the surgery was still affecting her day-to-day life.

“Update: yesterday was a struggle for me. I really wanted to come back but I need more time to recover. Please keep me in your thoughts during this challenging time. Will keep you updated,” she wrote Nov. 14.

Starr, who was married with a young daughter, Riley, and son, Noah, was remembered by her colleagues as “wonderful, bright and intelligent.”

“Our hearts are broken. Last night we were informed our Jessica Starr took her life,” morning anchor Amy Andrew wrote. “Her Fox 2 family is deep shock and cannot believe such a wonderful, bright and intelligent woman is gone. Keep her family in your prayers in the coming days as we all deal with our grief.”

Anchor Roop Raj also took time to pen a tribute to Starr, writing that “our hometown girl will always be remembered fondly.”
