This year's Emmy contenders came to play — and now they're ready for the big night on Sept. 15 on ABC
The 2024 Emmy Awards are almost here — and PEOPLE caught up with some of the year's starry nominees ahead of the ceremony on Sept. 15.
Between period pieces like The Gilded Age, Fellow Travelersand The Crown, to contemporary dramas like The Morning Showandfan-favorite sitcom Abbott Elementary, each show's star showed off their playful side in PEOPLE's exclusive portfolio.
Read on to learn more about how Matt Bomer, Holland Taylor, Tyler James Williams, Carrie Coon and Elizabeth Debicki approached their roles — and what's in store for Emmys night.
Matt Bomer
Nominated for: Lead actor in a limited or anthology series or movie, Fellow Travelers
"I am mostly just grateful that a show like this could exist," Bomer tells PEOPLE of his nomination for playing closeted State Department official Hawkins Fuller. "Because we've all been around at a time when it couldn't."

"Thankfully I have teenagers now, so everybody sleeps in," Bomer says of what his Emmys day will look like with husband Simon Halls and their three teenage sons: Kit, Walker and Henry. "After the show, we'll go out. Even if it's just In-N-Out, I'm happy."

Of his own love for games, Bomer, 46, says, "I was a Mario Kart freak growing up, and I can play it on my phone now. But then it took too much of money. I'm like, 'This has to stop.'"

Holland Taylor
Nominated for: Supporting actress in a drama series, The Morning Show
"I was surprised," Taylor, 81, tells PEOPLE of her ninth nomination. "Four women were nominated just from The Morning Show, so I was lucky to be among them."
Reflecting on the poignant scene between her character, TV network board president Cybil Richards, and Nicole Beharie, as new morning show anchor Chris Hunter, Taylor says, "We both wanted to get it right and be alive in the moment. We were apprehensive about it before and sort of sweated through it, kind of clung to each other."
Holland Taylor
When asked her favorite game, one comes to mind immediately: "Scrabble, absolutely."
"Monopoly" makes the list, too — but it's really the company that counts for Taylor. "Games are fun while you're chewing the fat with friends."

Nominated for: Supporting actor in a comedy series, Abbott Elementary
"There were times when I couldn't imagine being nominated, and every time it happens, I feel connected to that version of me that just didn't think this was possible," the three-time nominee tells PEOPLE.

"I would love to see Solange [Knowles] as a cousin," Williams, 31, admits when asked who he has his sights set on for a guest-star spot in an upcoming season. "I feel like we look alike."

Williams, who plays kind first-grade teacher Gregory Eddie on the hit sitcom, considers himself "very" competitive. "Especially when it comes to Monopoly. I play the long game," he says. "I'll drag this game out all night long if I had to. I've had one go almost five hours."

Carrie Coon
Nominated for: Lead actress in a drama series, The Gilded Age
On being nominated alongside her husband Tracy Letts (Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty), Coon tells PEOPLE, "Our children are 6 and 3, so the chaos never calms down. So it was just any other night — but exciting, of course."

"We have a ball," Coon, 43, who plays new-money matriarch Bertha Russell, says of filming the HBO series' ensemble scenes. "There's a lot of singing, dancing, a lot of complaining, and we just laugh."

When it comes to gaming, Coon has her kids on her mind. "I'm playing a lot of Candy Crush right now. It's the one game that both of my children can follow the rules."

Nominated for: Supporting actress in a drama series, The Crown
The Australian actress, 34, tells PEOPLE she thinks the hit Netflix royal series wrapped up in the best way after six seasons. "I think it ended in the right place."

"I had to work so hard at her voice that I had to consciously bring it back to my own accent."

Game nights are more about the people than the place, though, for her. "I'm deeply uncompetitive. I'm the first person to get up and get a snack for people."
