23rd Congressional District: Republican incumbent Nick Langworthy vs Democrat Thomas Carle

When incumbent Republican Nicholas Langworthy seeks a second term representing the 23rd District in the U.S. House of Representatives in the November election, he will face a challenge from Democrat Thomas Carle.

The district includes all of Allegany, Steuben, Chemung, Schuyler, Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties, plus a large part of Erie County.

Both candidates include the economy high on their list of priorities, but they each have other top issues as well.

Nicholas Langworthy (R)

Langworthy is a former Republican Party official, and was elected to his first two-year term in Congress in 2022, easily defeating Democrat Max Della Pia.

Langworthy lives in Niagara County. He has has worked in politics throughout his career with stints in the district offices of Congressmen Tom Reynolds and Chris Lee. He was elected Erie County Republican Chairman in 2010 and named state GOP chair in 2019, a position he relinquished after his election to the House.

Issues

Here are some of Langworthy's top concerns, according to his campaign website:

  • Economy: Curb wasteful government spending that is driving inflation and growing the national debt. Make American energy independent and reduce gas prices.

  • Public safety: Secure the border and combat illegal immigration. Support 200,000 more police officers through recruiting bonuses and oppose all efforts to defund the police.

  • Government accountability: Uphold free speech, protect the lives of unborn children and their mothers, guarantee religious freedom, and safeguard the Second Amendment. Conduct rigorous oversight to rein in government abuse of power and corruption, and improve transparency.

Thomas Carle (D)

Carle grew up in Broome County and now lives in the Fredonia area (Chautauqua County). He graduated from Broome Community College, and also attended SUNY Geneseo and the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Carle, who ran unsuccessfully for the 23rd District seat in 2022 as an independent, is a retired plant manager of food and beverage manufacturing, and former manager of human resources.

Issues

These are some of the top issues listed on Carle's campaign website:

  • Reproductive rights: Defending a woman’s right to make her own decisions regarding the size and timing of her family.

  • Economy: Addressing inflation and high fuel prices, working to increase competition in the industrial sector to allow the law of supply and demand to work for consumers. Encouraging vocational training and education programs to ensure a qualified workforce.

  • Environment: Identify commonly used chemicals that are hazardous to life and limit or eliminate their use. Promote energy conservation programs that can lead to long-term savings while reducing energy usage and the need for fossil fuels.
