Aces of Trades: Social butterfly finds her path creating strategic marketing plans

NEW CONCORD – She’s overjoyed to be where she is.

“Growing up I was, and still am, an outgoing social butterfly,” assessed Emilee Mulhall. “I was always trying to have fun, and some would say I was a chatty kid. I dreamed of becoming a broadcast journalist and being on The Today Show. I remember watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with my family and I thought it would be a fun job to interview celebrities. In fact, when I told my mom I was switching my major to journalism, her first reaction was, ‘Oh my god! You are going to be on The Today Show!’ I remember laughing as I told her I wasn’t taking that track in the journalism program. While my childhood dream was to interview celebrities, I chose a degree with a focus in advertising and public relations.”

Today, Mulhall is on the strategic marketing and communications team at Muskingum University as marketing coordinator for the school’s graduate and continuing studies program.

“I get the opportunity to work in various areas,” she explained, “from content creation for social media, feature writing for the university’s publications, campaign management, market research, and more. It’s never a boring day at work and I get to be involved in different projects for all the graduate and adult programs.”

Mulhall grew up in Youngstown, graduated from high school there in 2017, then earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism strategic communications from Ohio University in Athens in 2021.

“When I started my freshman year at Ohio University, I was originally a speech pathology major,” she said. “I quickly learned that field was not for me and decided to seek guidance from my adviser at OU. We explored different options, and I was introduced to journalism. I knew the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at OU is well-known and has a great reputation. I wanted to be part of something like that – to be surrounded by people who are passionate about their field and are known for it.

“After graduating,” she continued, “I went on the job hunt, which had its ups and downs, of course. But I didn’t let that discourage me. I found the job position posted online and was immediately interested. After my first interview, I knew Muskingum was where I wanted to be.”

Mulhall started at Muskingum University in spring of 2022. She is, by the way, one of the recipients of the 2024 Make Muskingum Home Scholarship from the Muskingum County Community Foundation and the J.W. and M.H. Straker Charitable Foundation that assists in paying off her student loans.

“Because of them,” she noted, “I can continue to grow within myself, my community, and in my career.”

Bonnie Callahan is associate vice president of graduate and continuing studies at Muskingum University.

“From the start,” Callahan said, “Emilee has rolled up her sleeves and been eager to learn to create a strategic marketing plan not only to promote our programs but to secure enrollment in the programs – results oriented. She always has a smile on her face, even in the most stressful and challenging times.

"Emiliee is a joy to work with.”

“I didn’t realize when I started working at Muskingum that I would genuinely connect with what I do,” Mulhall responded. “I know opening the next chapter in your life can be scary, especially right out of college, but I’m overjoyed this is where my path has taken me.”
