Adele announces extended hiatus from performing after Vegas residency: ‘I will not see you for an incredibly long time’

The singer called her past three years of performing "the longest I've ever done and probably the longest I will ever do."

The 2011 Adele song "Don't You Remember" begins with the words, "When will I see you again?" When it comes to the singer herself, we aren't so sure anymore.

On stage during the final night of her Munich residency, the superstar chanteuse told fans that she has "ten shows to do," referring to her ongoing Las Vegas residency, "but after that, I will not see you for an incredibly long time.”

She continued, "And I will hold you dear in my heart for that whole length of my break.”

Adele's Munich residency was supposed to follow her "Weekends with Adele" residency in Las Vegas as the cap on a packed three years of near-nonstop performing. "I have really enjoyed performing for three years, which is the longest I've ever done and probably the longest I will ever do," she told the crowd.

But in April, the singer was forced to postpone the Vegas dates due to a prolonged period of sickness. That residency began in Nov. 2022 and has encompassed over 100 live shows. After just five more weekends, Adele plans on entering into the kind of extended hiatus she's come to be known for between albums.

“I just need a rest," she told the crowd at the Adele Arena custom-built for her Munich shows. She became visible with emotion, her voice trembling when she said, "I have spent the last seven years building a new life for myself, and I want to live it now... I will remember these shows for eternity because they have been spectacular."

Adele indicated in July that she was headed toward a musical hiatus. "I don’t have any plans for new music, at all," she said. "I want a big break after this and I think I want to do other creative things, just for a little while."

She also seemingly confirmed her engagement to boyfriend Rich Paul in August when a fan proposed marriage during a live show. "I can't marry you, because I'm already getting married," she told the fan. She also referred to Paul as "my husband" at a Sept. 2023 Vegas show.

At a subsequent Vegas performance, the singer revealed she suffers from sciatica, which may also count as a contributing factor to her decision to step back from the stage.

"I truly have no idea when I will ever do anything like this ever again its going to be a very f---ing long time," she told the crowd in Munich.

The time between the Grammy winner's albums has steadily been increasing over the years. Fans waited three years after her debut 19 for the follow-up, the gargantuan hit 21. After that, Adele took four years to release 25, and then six years to release her most recent album, 30. If the trend holds, it could be upwards of six years for the release of Adele's fifth album.

Before plunging into the final two showstoppers of the night, her Grammy-sweeping hits "Someone Like You" and "Rolling in the Deep," Adele told the crowd, "This is my final moment with you now. I would like to thank you again, thank you so much for coming to my show. I would like to thank anyone who's ever come to my shows, ever."
