Alliance man dies, another person hurt after being hit by Amtrak train in Sebring

SEBRING ‒ A man died and a woman was injured when they were hit by a train while walking on railroad tracks at 1:59 a.m. Monday, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

Michael Lawson Jr., 21, of Alliance, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers from the Canfield post are trying to positively identify the woman, who is in critical condition at the Summa Health System Akron Campus.

The collision occurred on the Norfolk Southern line near Pennsylvania Avenue between 16th and 17th streets.

The Amtrak passenger train was carrying 136 passengers. None of the train occupants was injured.

The woman and Lawson were walking next to the tracks before the train approached, the patrol said. It appears they tried to cross the tracks before the train hit them.

The crash investigation is continuing Monday morning.
