'Altercation' inside Red Square causes fatal shooting in Burlington: What police say

A 30-year-old man from Stowe was shot and killed just after midnight on Saturday on Church Street.

Teville Williams was shot several times, after what police say was an altercation with Aaliyah Johnson, 22. Police have arrested Johnson. Police say there is no threat to the public and have recovered a .45 caliber pistol that they say was used in the shooting.

The gunfire was heard by the Burington Police Community Service Officer, who was on foot in City Hall Park, and immediately responded. Officers responded and located Wiliams.

"They immediately began CPR. An off-duty officer who was nearby also assisted. At the same time, another officer approaching the scene encountered and apprehended a female suspect," according to police. The victim was transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center and declared dead there.

"Officers attempting to provide medical care to the victim were hampered by a large crowd that surrounded the officers," according to a press report. "This crowd had to be pushed back in order to preserve the crime scene, which included shell casings, bullets, and blood evidence."

Police have said their preliminary investigation reveals Williams and Johnson had an altercation inside Red Square, a bar in Church Street Marketplace. Williams allegedly assaulted Johnson, according to the police statement.

"Staff from the bar required both parties to leave, via separate doors. Ms. Johnson exited one door and moved towards the other to confront Mr. Williams on Church Street. She then allegedly shot him several times," according to police.

The shooting occurred at 12:28 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24. Burlington Police Department asks any witnesses or people with information to contact them at 802-658-2704.

Is this related to other firearm incidents in Burlington

Earlier Friday, the Burlington Police Department asked for the public’s assistance as they sought information "about several violent crimes that have taken place in downtown Burlington over the past two weeks."

"These crimes have been associated with large groups of suspects and perpetrators, some of whom have been identified as juveniles," according to that press release. "Many of the involved persons have been shown to carry firearms, and the shooting that occurred on August 11 at the A_Dog Skatepark, in which a juvenile from New York was shot in the torso, is associated with these violent acts."
