AMoA exhibit features photos depicting 'Shades of Compassion'

The Amarillo Museum of Art (AMoA) has announced a new photography exhibition, "Shades of Compassion," which will be on display at the museum Aug. 24 through Dec. 29.

An exhibition opening reception is scheduled to take place at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, with a gallery talk by Jon Kolkin, M.D., president of the Shades of Compassion Foundation, at 7:15 p.m. Admission is free for AMoA members, or $15 for non-members, with tickets at the door.

According to a news release, the exhibition’s primary goal is to promote compassion worldwide through inspirational, thought-provoking photographs. Drawn from a diverse roster of 41 international fine art photographers, the exhibit's 50 photographs encompass a diverse spectrum of perspective, subject and artistic expression.

"Curated to engender a nuanced experience of compassion, the exhibition invites the viewer to dig deeper into their understanding of compassion. The photographs are sequenced and organized into three theme groups: Environment, Humanity, and Spirituality," the release says. "Opportunities for engagement in exploring and experiencing compassion are wide ranging - recognizing planet Earth as our collective home, an expansive inter-dependent web of life; weighing the fragility of endangered species and the complexity of human interactions with other life forms; witnessing isolation and alienation as well as the power of love, nurture, caring touch, inter-generational support, and transformative spiritual experience. SHADES OF COMPASSION provides compelling portals for a broad spectrum of compassionate connection."

Compassion is a foundation for non-violent conflict resolution, equity, sustained social engagement, and addressing challenges facing the planet and all of its inhabitants. The exhibit's release also notes that extensive research in neuroscience and medicine suggests individuals who engage in acts of compassion toward themselves and others benefit personally, achieving greater physical and emotional health and well-being.

The AMoA says the "Shades of Compassion" exhibition relies on positive, constructive emotions as a means to achieve its primary objectives and strives to provide an immersive, safe, contemplative environment.

Exhibit sponsors are the Shades of Compassion Foundation and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.

The museum is located at 2200 South Van Buren on the Washington Street campus of Amarillo College. AMoA hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday. For more information, visit www.amoa.org, email amoa@actx.edu, or call (806) 371-5050 or (806) 371-5392 (weekends).
