The moment Anne Hathaway crossed paths with Adam Shulman in 2008, she knew he was the one—and she was right. Both actors and New York natives, the duo had plenty to bond over, and tied the knot in 2012. To make matters even more romantic, Shulman proposed with a ring he designed. Since welcoming two children, the pair's bond and appreciation for one another has only deepened.

Since their sweet beginnings, the two have kept their romance largely under wraps, with Shulman flying under the radar—except for the rare occasions they shut down the red carpet by walking it together. Read ahead to learn more about the man who captured Hathaway's whole heart.

He's an actor.

Shulman shares Hathaway's passion for acting. After graduating from Brown University with a degree in theater in 2003, he went on to appear in five episodes of drama American Dreams in 2005. A couple years later, he played Deputy Enos Strate in the TV movie The Dukes of Hazzard: The Beginning; he also appeared as "Youth Voter #1" in a 2006 episode of West Wing.

He is also a jewelry designer.

A man of many talents, Shulman picked up jewelry designing after meeting designer Heidi Nahser Fink, who worked on Hathaway's Alice in Wonderland. Shulman sent Nahser Fink an idea for a lightbulb-shaped pendant for Hathaway, which they then collaborated on. The two started James Banks Design.

For his ultimate project, in collaboration with diamond jewelry company Kwiat, Shulman designed the ring he used to pop the question to Hathaway. "He had a very strong vision for what he knew Anne would love," owner Greg Kwiat told People.

They produced a film together.

Shulman and Hathaway aren't just romantic partners, they became business partners, along with director Jonathan Demme, to produce Song One. In the 2015 romance-musical, Hathaway starred alongside Johnny Flynn.

"People always say don't work with your spouse," Hathaway said of them joining forces. "But I loved working with him. He's really good at this, and he's a wonderful producer. And I feel like I actually learned a lot from him in the process."

Hathaway and Shulman teamed up again in 2015 to co-produce the sci-fi comedy The Shower. They had plans to work together on Puzzler together, which was first reported in 2011, though nothing has come of the movie yet.

The pair first met at the 2008 Palm Springs Film Festival, an encounter that left Hathaway with heart-eyes. She revealed to Harper's Bazaar UK in 2014 that she told a friend at the time, "I'm going to marry that man." She continued, “I knew from the second I met him that he was the love of my life."

They had a discreet wedding.

The couple first sparked engagement rumors after Hathaway was spotted with a ring on that finger while walking with Shulman in Brooklyn's Fort Greene Park. They followed it up with a low-key, nature-inspired wedding at a private home in Big Sur, California, on Sept. 29, 2012.

The Interstellar star wore a custom Valentino gown, a vintage-inspired headband, and a simple veil. The couple was joined by more than 150 guests, none of whom were A-list stars, though.

They have two kids.

Hathaway and Shulman welcomed their first child, a son named Jonathan Rosebanks, on March 24, 2016. Their second son, Jack, arrived in 2019. The parents have kept their children's lives largely private.

However, Shulman sweetly gushed about parenthood to People in 2020. "Every aspect is amazing," he told the publication, adding that Hathaway "amazes" him as a mother. "Every day makes me appreciate her more."

Their love is deep.

Hathaway told Elle Shulman has helped her regain her ability to trust others, something that was dampened following her high-profile split from Italian property developer Raffaello Follieri in 2008.

"He changed my ability to be in the world comfortably," she told the publication in 2017. "I think the accepted narrative now is that we, as women, don't need anybody. But I need my husband. His unique and specific love has changed me."

They have matching tattoos.

Hathaway revealed on The Drew Barrymore Show that she and Shulman got matching "M" tattoos.

"The idea is that individually we’re whole but together we’re more,” she explained. “I don’t expect him to complete me and he doesn’t expect me to complete him. I’m my own person. He’s his own person, and we choose to be together because we believe we make each other better."
