Shanghai celebrated New Year's Eve with a drone performance

Footage of Shanghai's stunning light show in celebration of the new year shows a performance that's a little different than those in other major cities.

That's because, in lieu of a traditional fireworks display, Shanghai rang in 2020 with an elaborate drone performance. More than 2,000 drones illuminated the sky in synchronized form, creating stunning and unique visuals for spectators.

As the countdown began for the end of the year, the drones rose up and formed intricate 3-D patterns that blow regular fireworks shows out of the water.

Using drones also cuts down on the noise and smoke pollution that fireworks generate.
