Asteroids, stars and muddy fun: 7 events for this weekend

Jun. 27—Did you know, the first discovered asteroid was Ceres in 1801? Now, over 200 years later, you can learn more about these space objects this weekend at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science. Or check out one of these other events that also rock.

Twinkle, twinkle

The Albuquerque Astronomical Society and the Wildlife West Nature Park are hosting a Star Party from 8:30-11 p.m. Friday, June 28. Enjoy an indoor slideshow presentation before heading outdoors to observe the night sky with the help of telescopes. The nature park is located at 87 North Frontage Road, Edgewood. The event is free.

Rock on

Celebrate International Asteroid Day at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, June 30. Learn about asteroids from a NASA Solar System Ambassador, participate in hands-on activities and more. The event is free with museum admission. The museum is located at 1801 Mountain Road NW.

Slinging mud

Kids can have some good, probably not totally clean, fun at the International Mud Day event, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 29, at the Open Space Visitor Center. The kids can scramble through a mud obstacle course, play in the "Mud Cafe" and more. The visitor center is located at 6500 Coors Blvd. NW.

Taking a stroll

Enjoy the views of the bosque with a free evening hike from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday, June 29. Participants of this observation stroll will depart from the Open Space Visitor Center, 6500 Coors Blvd. NW, for a short-moderate hike. The event is free.

Gee Wiz-ard!

The Santa Fe Railyard summer movie series is taking you over the rainbow with a viewing of "The Wizard of Oz" at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 29. The event is free but visit tickets.lensic360.org to reserve your spot. The Santa Fe Railyard Park is located at 740 Cerrillos Road in Santa Fe.

'New Words, New Voices'

The students of Ethos Literacy are bringing an afternoon of storytelling and poetry to Fusion from 2:30-4 p.m. Saturday, June 29. The event is free but visit fusionnm.org to reserve your spot. Fusion is located at 708 First St. NW.

Batter up

The Albuquerque Isotopes continue their homestand against the Salt Lake Bees at 6:35 p.m. Friday, June 28, and Saturday, June 29, and 6:05 p.m. Sunday, June 30. Saturday's Dukes Retro Night game will feature postgame fireworks (weather permitting). Tickets start at $10, plus fees, at milb.com/albuquerque. Rio Grande Credit Union Field at Isotopes Park is located at 1601 Avenida Cesar Chavez SE.
