Is August going to stay this cool? Here's what the AccuWeather long range forecast says

The situation has flip-flopped when it comes to weather in Massachusetts.

After the recent sweltering temperatures, things have cooled down a bit in the Northeast, while states like Florida, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Kansas are facing heat waves.

Last week, Tropical Rainstorm Debby brought "much cooler and less humid" air as it swept through the Northeast, AccuWeather Lead Long-Range Expert Paul Pastelok said in a release.

And despite it being August, it looks like those cooler temps will linger for awhile.

"A southward dip in the jet stream will persist from the Midwest to the Northeast for the next 1-2 weeks," Pastelok said. "There can be brief warmups and surges of humidity, but that is usually just ahead of a new push of cool air that will soon overtake the region.”

Pastelok explained that when a long-lasting jet stream dip develops in the region, like - in the Northeast right now - "it can easily result in temperatures no higher than the historical average and occasionally below the historical average."

"There is an excellent chance this same jet stream setup with its cool conditions will last up to the last week of August," Pastelok added.

Is there a chance warmer temperatures could return?

Pastelok said that is a possibility, explaining that near the end of August, the jet stream pattern could "flatten out" across the country, which "should allow less intrusions of cool air into the Northeast from central Canada....In turn, some warmer air from the plains should be able to mix eastward."
