Avengers 5 and 6 gets surprising returnMarvel Studios

The Russo brothers are in talks to return to the MCU with Avengers 5 and 6.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the filmmaking duo are in negotiations to make an unexpected comeback after being integral figures in Phases Two and Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Marvel Studios has been looking for a new director for the next Avengers movie ever since Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton dropped out last year.

At one point, Marvel executives were reportedly considering Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy for the job before going back to the Russo brothers.

Anthony and Joe Russo confirmed after the release of the record-breaking Avengers: Endgame that they were stepping away from the MCU. Up to that point, they'd made the third and fourth Avengers movies as well as Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War.

In the five-plus years since Endgame was released, the Russos have had success on Netflix with the Extraction films and next have a sci-fi film called The Electric State coming out, starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt.

Throughout their hiatus from the MCU, the Russos have publicly mentioned multiple times that a Secret Wars movie could draw them back to Marvel.

"You know, I read [Secret Wars] when I was 10 or 11, and it was the scale of getting all of the heroes together," Joe told BroBible in 2020. "It was one of the first major books to do that – that was really event-storytelling to me at its finest. And what happens when you put all of those personalities together.

"I also like the idea of villains having to team up with heroes. [Anthony] and I like complicated relationships between heroes and villains, we like villains who believe they're heroes in their own stories, so it's all sort of built into this notion of Secret Wars. To execute something on the scale of Infinity War was directly related to the dream of Secret Wars, which is even larger in scale."

The sixth Avengers movie was initially subtitled Secret Wars, but there may be changes since Avengers 5 has already nixed its planned Kang Dynasty subtitle due to Jonathan Majors' exit as Kang.

If Marvel goes with Secret Wars for the sixth film, it would be adapting a 1984 storyline where a cosmic being called The Beyonder transported heroes and villains to a planet known as Battleworld for a fight to the death.

All four Avengers movies are streaming on Disney+. The fifth movie will release on May 1, 2026, followed by Avengers 6 on May 7, 2027.
