Lagoda Below Deck at the New Bedford Whaling Museum

On the second Saturday of each month, guests can explore the lower decks of the Lagoda at the New Bedford Whaling Museum, 18 Johnny Cake Hill.

The next Lagoda Below Deck event is on Saturday, Aug. 10, from 10 to 11 a.m.

For one hour, go below the deck and explore the captain’s and crew’s living quarters.

Things To Do: Dungeons & Dragons at Marion Art Center; Alison Brown to perform at Narrows

Assembly of Dust at Narrows Center for the Arts

Get ready for a funky spin on 70s Americana, when Assembly of Dust performs at the Narrows Center for the Arts, 16 Anawan St., on Saturday, Aug. 10.

Doors open at 7, and the show begins at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $33 in advance, and $38 on the day of the show.

‘Aberration’ opening at New Bedford Art Museum

There will be an opening reception for “Aberration” at the New Bedford Art Museum, 608 Pleasant St., on Thursday, Aug. 8, from 5 to 8 p.m.

The exhibit features sculptures by Alex Buchanan, in which discarded materials like retired tugboat ropes, construction scraps, and iron rods are transformed into art.

Art classes at New Bedford Art Museum

Visitors can also stop by the New Bedford Art Museum to learn how to create some art of their own.

There will be a wheel-throwing art class on Monday, Aug. 5, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Learn the fundamentals of pottery with a seasoned ceramist. All materials will be provided. This is for ages 18 and up, and the cost is $180 for members, $200 for non-members. Month-long sessions are available. Find tickets online at https://tinyurl.com/ye2xabkk.

A “Diving Into Watercolor” workshop will be held on Saturday, Aug. 10, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. This workshop is designed for all skill levels. ‘Baskervile: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery’ at the Marion Art Center Theater

The Marion Art Center Theater presents “Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery.”

Ken Ludwig transforms Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Hound of the Baskervilles” into a murderously funny adventure.

This production is directed by Kate Fishman, and cast members include Scott Fishman, Matt Lynds, Elizabeth Rapoza, Kate Martin, and Allie Goodman; with stage manager Kiah Allaire, Bethany Lemoureux as costumier, and Steve McManus on sound and light.

Show dates are Aug. 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, and 25.

Friday and Saturday shows are at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m.

Performances will be held at the MAC, 80 Pleasant St., in the Anne Braitmayer Webb Theater.

Tickets are $20 for MAC members and $23 for non-members.

Call for entries for the Marion Art Center’s Summer Members’ Show

The Marion Art Center is calling for entries for their Summer Members’ Show.

It will run from Aug. 15 to Sept. 20, with an opening reception planned for Thursday, Aug. 15, from 5 to 7 p.m.

All MAC members are invited to enter up to two pieces each. All works must be original, must have been executed by the artist within the last five years, and must not have been previously shown at the MAC. The MAC will not exhibit works that are in poor condition (including frame) or are not properly prepared for installation.

To exhibit, members should drop off their work at the MAC on Saturday, Aug. 10, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.; or on Tuesday, Aug. 13, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Artists can download the contract ahead of time at marionartcenter.org/on-exhibit.

Coming soon: Rotch-Jones-Duff House and Reverie Theatre Group present ‘Twelfth Night’

The Rotch-Jones-Duff House & Garden Museum and the Reverie Theatre Group are teaming up once more for the free summer program, Shakespeare in New Bedford.

This 2024 season runs Thursday through Saturday, Aug. 15, 16, and 17; and Aug. 22, 23, and 24, with show times at 7:30 p.m.

A sensory-friendly matinee will be offered on Sunday, Aug. 25, at 2 p.m.

This year’s performance, held at RJD, 396 County St., New Bedford, will be a fresh take on “Twelfth Night,” with the production set during the Harlem Renaissance.

This program is supported in part by grants from the Acushnet, Dartmouth, Mattapoisett, and New Bedford Cultural Councils, local agencies, which are supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency. It is also supported in part by the Wicked Cool Places grant funded by the City of New Bedford, through American Rescue Plan awards, and its Arts, Culture and Tourism Fund, and is facilitated by New Bedford Creative at the NBEDC.

Admission is free.
