Benedict Cumberbatch's home was attacked and damaged by a former chef wielding a fish knife while the actor and his family were inside, it has been revealed.

Jack Bissell pleaded guilty to criminal damage at Wood Green Crown Court on May 10, BBC News reports.

Bissell, who is 35, was fined £250 and given a three-year restraining order preventing him from going near Cumberbatch's family and their residential area.

A court heard that the incident involved Bissell kicking through the front garden gate, pulling up a plant and throwing it at a garden wall, then spitting at the intercom and tearing it loose with a fish knife.

Cumberbatch, his wife Sophie Hunter and their three children were home at the time.

The court was told Bissell had been heard shouting: "I know you've moved here, I hope it burns down." DNA found on the intercom led to his arrest.

It's unclear why the former chef targeted Cumberbatch and his family, and he offered no defence in court.

Bissell was convicted and sentenced earlier this month, though the case was unable to be reported until blanket restrictions were challenged by The Daily Mail.
