When is the best time to get the flu shot 2024? Here's what the CDC says

The flu season typically arrives during the fall and winter, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The exact time differs each year but peak season occurs in December.

Wegmans, the supermarket chain, is now offering flu vaccines for children, adults and seniors for the 2024-2025 season at all pharmacy locations.

“The most important step to protecting yourself during the upcoming flu season is getting the influenza vaccine, and we recommend getting it early in the season, ideally by end of October,” said Erin Pfenninger, Wegmans clinical and wellness coordinator.

And families can schedule and appointment without a prescription for the vaccine.

“In addition to flu shots, our pharmacies have many other vaccines available including immunizations for COVID-19, RSV, and pneumonia," said Pfenninger.

Where can I get a flu shot?

Wegmans is not the only store offering the flu shot. Consumers can get the vaccine at CVS, Walgreens and Urgent Care centers.

Customers can schedule appointments online or visit a store during business hours.

When should I get the flu vaccine?

According to the CDC, flu activity starts to increase in October and it recommends vaccines getting a vaccine as early as September.

The CDC says everyone should be vaccinated by the end of October.

What are the types of vaccines for this 2024-2025 flu season?

There are two types of influenza viruses that cause the flu season every winter in the United States. This year, all of the flu vaccines for 2024-2025 season will be trivalent (have three components) that will provide protection against the virus.

Trivalent flu vaccines are formulated to protect against three flu viruses (an A(H1N1) virus, an A(H3N2) virus and a B/Victoria virus). Both trivalent and quadrivalent flu vaccines are expected to offer similar protection against the flu viruses they protect against according to the CDC.

The flu vaccine is administered two ways, through a shot in the arm or through the nose with a nasal spray.

Is the flu shot free?

The flu vaccine is available at no cost through most insurance plans but it is available for out-of-pocket pricing, ranging between $60 to $116.
