Board votes in Toleno as interim superintendent at East Stroudsburg Area School District

William Riker is out, John Toleno is temporarily in, and the search for a new superintendent of East Stroudsburg Area School District is on.

The ESASD board held a special meeting on Tuesday, June 4, for the purpose of appointing an interim superintendent.

During the May 20 meeting, the board voted to part ways with Riker and approved a separation agreement. It ended a four-year contract, approved last September, that would have expired June 30, 2027.

At Tuesday's meeting, the ESASD board voted unanimously to approve appoint John Toleno as acting superintendent, effective Monday, June 10. The contract between ESASD and Toleno was also approved. He will stay on until a new superintendent can be appointed.

Toleno will be paid $800 per day, ESASD Board President Michael Catrillo told the Pocono Record.

Toleno previously served as the superintendent of Upper Merion School District in Montgomery County and superintendent of Stroudsburg Area School District before that.

Catrillo said during the meeting that the posting is up for the new superintendent as they work with the Pennsylvania School Boards Association.

"That posting will be up for several weeks. There will be interviews at the end of July," said Catrillo. "And we hope to have an appointment of the new superintendent at the August board meeting." Toleno will stay on until the next superintendent can start.

Catrillo announced there is a public survey on the ESASD website from PSBA for parents and staff to fill out and provide input. "We are very interested in what you have to say as far as the needs for a new superintendent, the characteristics, the attributes, the important issues. We very much want to work with the community and staff and include you as part of the process."

Riker's last day on the job is Friday, June 7.
