Brett Favre jokes about the Packers' kicking situation after roster cuts

For 16 years, the Green Bay Packers' kicking position was a model of stability with Mason Crosby.

But over the last year, the position has been mostly unstable.

The Packers parted ways with last year's kicker and Crosby's replacement, Anders Carlson, on Tuesday, closing the chapter on his brief career in Green Bay. They also released Alex Hale, who had been the Packers' designated International Player Pathway player.

Greg Joseph, the 30-year-old veteran brought in to compete for the job, didn't light up the world with his accuracy in training camp or the preseason. But he's the last man standing — for now — and it appears that he'll be the team's kicker in Week 1.

Kicker Greg Joseph has made the Green Bay Packers' 53-man roster, beating out last year's kicker Anders Carlson.

But when the season begins for the Packers next Friday against the Philadelphia Eagles in Brazil, a Packers legend has a solution to the team's kicking situation.

Don't kick it.

"Let (quarterback) Jordan (Love) go for it on 4th down every time," Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre tweeted Tuesday afternoon in response to Cheesehead TV's post about the Packers' kickers.

Joking aside, if Joseph succeeds in 2024, general manager Brian Gutekunst will look smart for keeping him instead of Carlson. If not, the kicking carousel will continue.

Greg Joseph stats

Joseph is a career 82.6% field-goal kicker in his five NFL seasons across three teams. He made 81.8% of his field goals the last three years with the Minnesota Vikings. Extra points, which are 33 yards, appear to be an issue, though. He's missed 12 while in Minnesota, a team that plays its home games indoors.

Joseph made a Vikings record 61-yard field goal in 2022, but he's mostly been shaky from long-distance. He's just a 66% kicker from 40 yards or more, compared to 98.4% from inside 40 yards.
