Bullets flew in this wild car chase on Route 80. Read how it happened

A mugging in a parking lot turned into a wild car chase scene out of a movie when a suspect barreling down Route 80 in a car leaned out the window and fired two shots at the car behind him, breaking the windshield and injuring the driver.

The victims pulled over and dialed 911, and the suspects continued driving. Officers from the Lodi Police Department and New Jersey State Police responded to the scene at 11:24 p.m.

Jaquil Brown, 29, of Paterson, and Shaheem Clark, 19, of Elmwood Park, are facing several charges, including attempted murder, robbery and weapons possession, stemming from the July 21 incident in Lodi, the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office said in a press release on Wednesday.

The incident began when a group of friends left a business on Route 17 in Lodi and got into their car in the parking lot next door. A male suspect, later identified as Clark, approached the car, opened the door and pointed a gun to the head of the person sitting in the passenger's seat, demanding an expensive wristwatch, the Prosecutor's Office said.

Clark then struck the victim in the head with the gun and "forcibly removed" the watch from the victim's wrist, the release said. He returned to a waiting getaway car parked alongside the victims', driven by a man later identified as Brown, and fled the scene, authorities said.

The victims chased the suspects onto Route 17 and later to Route 80 in Paterson, the release said. While on the highway, Clark leaned out the window and fired two shots at the trailing vehicle, one of which broke the glass on the front windshield and injured the driver.

Detectives identified the vehicle used in the incident and found it in Paterson on July 24.

Brown was arrested in connection with the robbery on July 25. On Aug. 28, detectives learned that Clark was already in custody at the Hudson County jail on an unrelated matter.

Brown was charged with first-degree armed robbery, second-degree conspiracy to commit robbery and unlawful weapons possession, and third-degree receiving stolen property. He was remanded to the Bergen County jail and appeared in court on Aug. 7, when he was detained pending further court action.

Clark was charged with first-degree attempted murder and armed robbery and second-degree conspiracy to commit robbery and unlawful weapons possession, the Prosecutor's Office said. He remains in the Hudson County jail pending the outcome of a separate criminal case.

Records show that Clark was previously wanted on attempted murder, carjacking, kidnapping and robbery charges in Paterson stemming from a March 18 shooting on 20th Avenue. He was also the victim of a shooting in Paterson in October 2023.
