Camila Mendes lands lead movie role in Masters of the Universe reboot

Riverdale star Camila Mendes has joined the cast of the upcoming reboot of Masters of the Universe alongside Nicholas Galitzine.

Mendes is set to star in the role of Teela, the captain of the royal guard at the palace of Eternos who has a close relationship with Prince Adam aka He-Man, to be played by Galitzine.

Directed by Bumblebee's Travis Knight, the film inspired by Mattel's 1980s toys will follow 10-year-old Prince Adam as he crashes to Earth in his spaceship and is separated from his weapon of choice, the magical Power Sword.

Two decades later, Adam will need to embark on a mission to defend his home planet from powerful villain Skeletor.

After the news of her casting broke, Mendes took to Instagram to share her excitement.

"Stoked to get yoked," she wrote in a post. "still can't believe this is real….thank you @amazonmgmstudios @mattel and travis knight for believing in me as your teela, let's go to eternia!!!"

The Do Revenge star also included a picture of her shocked reaction to being cast in the long-delayed reboot. The snap captures the moment when she received the call as she covers her eyes in disbelief.

Initially developed for Netflix, the Masters of the Universe movie was eventually dropped by the streamer in the summer of 2023. It has since been acquired by Amazon MGM Studios and is now set to hit cinemas on June 5, 2026.

ParaNorman's Chris Butler is writing the script for the film following first drafts penned by David Callaham and Aaron and Adam Nee.

The He-Man movie isn't the only reboot Mendes is starring in as she's also been announced to appear in a new version of 1990s slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer

She stars opposite Glass Onion's Madelyn Cline, The Wilds' Sarah Pidgeon, Atlanta star Tyriq Withers and The Little Mermaid's Jonah Hauer-King.

The Masters of the Universe live-action movie will be released in cinemas on June 5, 2026.
