Catherine O'Hara and Bo Welch are having a full-circle moment at the Venice Film Festival.

After first meeting on the set of the original Beetlejuice film in 1987 — her as an actress, him as a production designer — the couple walked the red carpet at the premiere of its long-awaited sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, on Wednesday, Aug. 28.

Welch, 72, looked dapper in a classic black suit, and O'Hara rocked a unique black column gown featuring long sleeves, black floral detailing and a gothic, wire-like neckline.

Wearing her blonde locks in a straight style over her shoulders, the actress, 70, finished the look with a black clutch and coordinating platform peep-toe heels.

O'Hara and Welch married on April 25, 1992. They welcomed their first son, Matthew, in 1994, and their second, Luke, in 1997.

But before that, even though Welch "talked to" O'Hara "all the time" during the Beetlejuice shoot in Los Angeles and the two of them would "hang out on set" and "have some laughs," he never made a move on his own, she told PEOPLE in January.

"I thought, 'He's going to ask me out. Oh, he's going to ask me.' And stupid me, I should have asked him out, but I didn't," the Home Aloneactress recalled at the time.

They went on to shoot the exteriors of the iconic Beetlejuice house in Vermont, and that was the day that Welch asked O'Hara out, which was admittedly her favorite part of filming the movie.

And director Tim Burton had a little something to do with it, after O'Hara confided in him that it felt as if Welch was holding out on her.

"Tim said, "Let me see what I can do,' " she told PEOPLE. "So one of the first days shooting in Vermont ... Bo came up to me that day and said, 'Our department's going to a swap meet. You want to come?' "

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice sees the return of Burton, 66, as director, 36 years after the original Beetlejuice materialized in theaters in 1988.

Also returning alongside O'Hara as Delia Deetz are her costars Michael Keaton as the titular ghost with the most, plus Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz. They're joined by new cast members Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe, Monica Bellucci and Justin Theroux, who were also in attendance at the Venice premiere.

While Welch is not involved in the sequel, he is standing by the side of his former Beetlejuice colleagues — including his wife, who spoke to PEOPLE in January about how their bond has stood the test of time, including challenging moments.

"We've been through some dangerous times in our marriage, and thank God we both just really wanted to work on it and stay married," O'Hara said. "I have friends who've been divorced and one of them really wanted to work on it and the other didn't. And you just can't win. You can't do anything that way. But thank God we both wanted to, when we went through rough times."

"And laughing. Respecting each other and talking, but laughing comes from that too," she added.
"People always say communicate, right? Tell them how you're feeling."

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is in theaters Sept. 6.
