Catherine Tate is returning to Doctor Who for a special project, one happening next week.

Composer Murray Gold is back for his fourth prom, which takes place on Monday, August 26, and will be broadcast later in the year. After reprising her role of Donna Noble in the three 60th-anniversary specials last year, she will serve as the Prom's host.

Gold announced the news in an interview with Radio Times, stating: "It's Catherine Tate [hosting]. I'm really happy it's her because she's an icon of the show.

"She actually dropped me a note after the specials aired, saying nice things about what I'd done. Oh, God, she's great!"

He also teased that Ncuti Gatwa would appear in specially filmed video inserts, while a lot of music played hasn't been officially released to purchase yet, so he's having to quickly come up with song titles for the tracks from the specials and most recent season.

"This Prom isn't going to be a jukebox musical because people aren't necessarily going in already humming and knowing the pieces," he said. "There's a lot of new stuff."

But he also reassured fans that there will be a lot of familiar pieces from his previous run from 2005 to 2017, as well as music from Jodie Whittaker-era composer Segun Akinola.

"We've got a Segun Akinola suite. And then we've got a few of the old favourites," he stated, adding: "We've tried to balance it out so that the fans aren’t disappointed by the band coming on and only playing stuff from their latest album, which no one ever wants to hear. Hopefully, it all fits together quite nicely."

Unfortunately, there won't be any preview tracks from the upcoming Christmas special, due to various legal issues.

Doctor Who Prom 2024 will take place next week and air later in the year on the BBC. The main show airs on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Classic episodes of Doctor Who are available on BBC iPlayer in the UK.
