Catholic High, St. Amant athletes rule the 2024 LSWA Class 5A All-State squads

LHSAA champions rule the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Class 5A all-state baseball and softball teams.

Pitcher William Schmidt of Catholic High and St. Amant third baseman Alix Franklin claimed Outstanding Player honors on the teams selected by a panel of sportswriters from across the state.

Scott O’Brien of Archbishop Chapelle and Catholic High’s Brad Bass garnered Coach of the Year honors for the LSWA squads.

Schmidt led the Bears to the Division I Select baseball title, allowing one hit in a 5-0 victory over John Curtis in the title game. The LSU signee was 10-0 on the mound with 102 strikeouts in 63 2/3 innings with a 0.44 earned run average.

Bass coached Catholic to a 38-2 record and a No. 1 ranking in two national polls. The Bears lost to one Louisiana team and ended the season with a 20-game winning streak.

St. Amant’s Franklin also is an LSU signee who hit .533 while leading St. Amant to its third straight LHSAA softball title, including the Gators’ second in a row in Division I Non-Select.

Franklin finished the season with 18 home runs, 42 RBIs and 57 runs scored despite being walked 47 times.

O’Brien’s Chapelle squad ousted top-seeded St. Thomas More and No. 2 Curtis at the LHSAA tourney to win the Division I Select softball title — the first softball title in school history. The Chipmunks made their first title-game appearance in 20 years.
