Cavaliers 2024-25 schedule: Home opener, when LeBron James visits, everything else to know

The Cleveland Cavaliers have released their schedule for the 2024-25 NBA season.

The Cavs head into the season with new coach Kenny Atkinson, franchise player Donovan Mitchell committed long term and young big man Evan Mobley having agreed to a contract extension in July.

So what's in store with their 82-game regular-season NBA schedule? Here are some of the highlights:

When do the 2024-25 Cavaliers play their home opener?

The Cavs will open their home schedule at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 25 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse with a little intrigue as former coach J.B. Bickerstaff will bring in his Detroit Pistons to take on his former team. In some circles, Bickerstaff was a surprise hire for the Pistons, and his presence in Motown could certainly make this year's season series with the Pistons interesting.

When does LeBron James play the Cavs in Cleveland?

LeBron James gets to return home in the fall for an Oct. 30 date at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, fresh off leading Team USA to Olympic gold. James won the FIBA Olympic Most Valuable Player award in that tournament and, really, as he enters season 22, shows little signs of slowing down.

When do the NBA champion Boston Celtics play at the Cavaliers?

The NBA champion Boston Celtics make an early season stop at RMFH at 6 p.m. Dec. 1 and again at 7 p.m. Feb. 4 when things will likely be heating up for a run for the playoffs.

When do the Cavs begin play in NBA in-season tournament?

The Cavs Emirates NBA Cup games include:

  • 7 p.m. Nov. 15 vs. Chicago at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse

  • 7 p.m. Nov. 19 against the Boston Celtics at TD Garden

  • 2:30 p.m. Nov. 29 vs. Atlanta Hawks at State Farm Arena

  • 7 p.m. Dec. 3 vs. Washington Wizards at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse

Do the Cavaliers play on Christmas Day?

The Cavs will have to wait yet again for the spotlight of Christmas Day as the league again opted to not feature the team in one of its showcase games.

Do the Cavaliers play on Thanksgiving or any other holidays?

The closest the Cavs will get to Thanksgiving is a 2:30 p.m. tipoff against the Atlanta Hawks as part of the NBA Cup on Black Friday, the busiest shopping day of the year — allegedly. But they will take part in the league's marquee celebration of the Rev. Martin Luther King on Jan. 20 when they host the Phoenix Suns. They will also play Bulls on Veterans Day (Nov. 11).
