Central Bucks South is football Team of the Year after unexpected, historic run

The wins came early and often, piling up week after week, until Central Bucks South found itself at 8-0 with rival, and also unbeaten, Central Bucks West, next on the schedule.

And it would be the Bucks that would go to 9-0 with a convincing 40-29 victory.

"We learned from that loss," CB South senior lineman Rolan Hess said.

"They deserved to win that game and we thought if we kept playing well we'd get another chance to play them again in the playoffs."

The Titans did get that chance, and more, when the PIAA District One Class 6A tournament began.

Seeded fifth in the 16-team field, South edged Coatesville in the opening round, went on the road to beat Spring-Ford in the quarterfinals and made the most of its second chance by thumping West 42-14 in the semifinals.

A week later, playing at home and seeking the first district football title in school history, the Titans dominated sixth-seeded Downingtown West 27-7 to capture the championship.

The Titans' season would come to an 49-0 end against eventual PIAA champion and longtime powerhouse St. Joe's Prep a week later in the state semifinals, but it didn't diminish what South had done.

Because of what they accomplished the Titans have been named the Courier Times/Intelligencer Football Team of the Year, representing our coverage area of Bucks County and Eastern Montgomery County schools.

South's 13 wins (a school record) against just two losses didn't come as a shock to head coach Tom Hetrick.

"This is just an unbelievable group, and they should all be very proud of what they were able to do," said Hetrick, the Courier Times/Intelligencer Coach of the year.

"They took each game as a challenge, didn't look ahead, and just kept working and working. That's really hard to do, especially for high school players, but they kept their heads down and kept at it.

"They have a lot of great memories from this season, and they deserve them."
