The stars of Daredevil: Born Againare ready to unveil their story!

Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio came by the PEOPLE/EW suite at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim, California to tease their new miniseries — which Cox previously described as a “rebirth” of the Daredevilseries that ran on Netflix from 2015 to 2018.

When asked how they reacted to the reboot, Cox exclusively told PEOPLE that he was shocked that he would be reprising his role as Matt Murdock after saying goodbye to the series six years ago.

"We have a joke," Cox shared. "I think that we stopped shooting the original show at the end of 2016, beginning of 2018 and found out it was canceled somewhere in that period. And then it wasn't until midway through 2020 that we got a phone call from [President of Marvel Studios] Kevin [Feige] saying that they were interested in bringing the characters back."

The actor explained that the cast was in the dark about what capacity they would be returning, recalling, "Not even in the show at that point, just bringing the characters into MCU." After years passed by and the phone didn't ring, Cox confessed, "I completely let go."

"I'd moved on and occasionally Vincent and I would chat and he would say things like, 'Oh, they're going to call. I think they're going to us, but they're going to call us,'" he recalled. "And I would get off the phone and be like, the guy's delusional! He's got to let it go. It's going to be 10 years and he's still going. It's over. It's definitely over."

"It became really pathetic in Charlie's eyes," D'Onofrio added before Cox acknowledged, "He was right. I didn't see it. For me, it was shocking. Shocking. It was a great show and been silly for love."

On Friday, August 9, Marvel unveiled a first look into Daredevil: Born Again at the D23 convention. In the trailer, fans were in for a treat as they saw the return of their beloved villians Kingpin (D'Onofiro) and Punisher (Jon Bernthal) and heroes like White Tiger.

In July, Marvel Studios' Head of Streaming, Television and Animation Brad Winderbaum previously shared what fans can expect from the new Disney+ series and its evolution of characters on the Official Marvel Podcast.

Daredevil is incredible. It’s similar in some ways to X-Men ’97, because it’s reviving something that the fans love, but it is taking it in a new direction,” he explained. “These characters have matured. The universe is different than it was. Things have changed. Society’s changed.”

“Matt [Coz] and Wilson [D'Onofrio] have changed, and their characters are gonna collide in ways we’ve never seen before,” Winderbaum continued. “It’s no longer enough to try and murder each other, there’s a whole game of politics at play.”

Daredevil: Born Again will also see the return of Henson as Franklin “Foggy” Nelson and Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page.
