It's Week 2 of the Washington County football season for the seven public-school teams, while Saint James is aiming to build on its 2-0 start.

Four other county teams look to stay unbeaten, while three teams hunt for their first wins.

There are six games Friday night, including the year's first showdown between county teams, and one game Saturday afternoon.

Here are the matchups with predictions. (Last season, we correctly picked the winners in 52 of the 67 games.)

Friday's Week 2 games

Williamsport Wildcats (1-0) at Smithsburg Leopards (0-1), 6 p.m.

Series record: Leopards lead, 35-15.

Last meeting: Williamsport 31, Smithsburg 16 (Sept. 7, 2023)

Last week: Williamsport beat Winters Mill 40-16; Smithsburg lost to Francis Scott Key 22-15.

Notes: The Wildcats have won four straight against the Leopards since 2019, outscoring them 125-30 in the streak. … Williamsport scored 40 points in a game last week for the first time since defeating Liberty 45-43 in the second round of the 2A-1A West playoffs in 2022. … Blake DeLauter rushed for 141 yards and a touchdown in the opener for the Wildcats, while David Grayton had four catches for 133 yards and two TDs, and Aidan McAllister had two interceptions, including a pick six. … Vinny Roncone rushed for 111 yards and a TD last week for Smithsburg, which is looking to avoid its first 0-2 start since 2021.

Berkeley Springs Indians (1-1) at Clear Spring Blazers (1-0), 6 p.m.

Last week: Berkeley Springs beat Trinity Christian 38-0; Clear Spring beat Green Street 28-6.

Notes: The Blazers are aiming to start 2-0 for the second straight year and fourth time in program history. … In their Week 1 win, Alex Matthews rushed for a team-high 55 yards, had a TD catch and tied for the team lead in tackles with eight. … Camden Whittington had a big game on defense for Clear Spring, forcing two fumbles and recovering three, including one for a touchdown. … QB Aiden Cain led Berkeley Springs to victory last week, passing for 100 yards and a touchdown and rushing for 90 yards on six carries and a pair of TDs. … The Indians already have matched their win total from the previous two seasons combined after going 1-9 last year and 0-10 in 2022.

Football: Washington County Week 1 roundup

Boonsboro Warriors (1-0) at Liberty Lions (0-1), 6:30 p.m.

Series record: Tied, 3-3

Last meeting: Boonsboro 42, Liberty 28 (Sept. 8, 2023)

Last week: Boonsboro beat Catoctin 14-0; Liberty lost 41-18 to Walkersville.

Notes: The Warriors are looking for their third straight 2-0 start, while the Lions are aiming to avoid a second straight 0-2 start. … Boonsboro, which allowed the fewest points per game in the county last year (13.9), opened the season with a shutout. … Standouts included Colin Telemeco, who completed 10 of 14 passes for 131 yards, including a 60-yard TD to Matthew McAfee, and Jayden Paugh, who shined on defense with two interceptions. … Liberty was done in last week by Walkersville's DeMarques Ross, who rushed for 350 yards and five TDs.

North Hagerstown Hubs (0-1) at Manchester Valley Mavericks (0-1), 6:30 p.m.

Last week: North lost to Tuscarora 27-20; Manchester Valley lost to Perry Hall 34-6.

Notes: The Hubs have lost four straight to the Mavericks since 2019. … North is aiming to avoid its first 0-2 start since 2019. … Damean Thomas stood out on defense for the Hubs in Week 1, recording 16 tackles, including three for losses and two sacks, and forcing a fumble. … North's offensive stars included James Jackson, who rushed for 141 yards and two touchdowns, and Khalil Peggues, who had five catches for 93 yards and a TD.

South Hagerstown Rebels (1-0) at Spring Mills Cardinals (2-0), 7 p.m.

Last week: South beat Century 20-15; Spring Mills beat Wheeling Park 27-0.

Hancock Panthers (0-1) at Southern Garrett Rams (0-1), 7 p.m.

Last week: Hancock lost to Valley 33-0; Southern lost to Mountain Ridge 49-6.

Notes: Jayten McCarty led the Panthers last week with 51 yards rushing, while Aiden McCarty added 38 yards on the ground. … The Rams are back after canceling their season last year two games in due to a lack of healthy players. … Southern was held to 70 yards of total offense last week by Mountain Ridge, which led 35-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Saturday's Week 3 game

Kiski Cougars (0-2) at Saint James Saints (2-0), 12 p.m.

Last week: Kiski lost to Hill School 14-3; Saint James beat Phelps 46-6.

Notes: The Saints are gunning for their first 3-0 start since 2017. … Sammy Stonebraker has four touchdown runs this season for Saint James, while Jayden Yates has four TD passes, including two to Calvin Moss. … Saints kicker Jorge Diaz Nicolas, a senior from Spain, has accounted for 19 of the team's 87 points, connecting on 7 of 8 extra-point tries and 4 of 5 field-goal attempts, with a long of 39 yards. … Kiski, which went 1-8 last year, has been outscored 62-10 this season.
