Former St. John's star Sean Burke fans three in major league debut with Chicago White Sox
Former St. John's star Sean Burke was promoted to the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday, after the former third-round pick put together a strong season in the rotation for Triple-A Charlotte.

He made his Major League Debut when he entered Tuesday's game against Cleveland to start the seventh inning. Burke faced Bo Naylor to start the inning, and the Sutton native struck him out swinging as part of a scoreless inning. Burke ending the inning by getting Jose Ramirez swinging. He pitched three innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits, while walking one and fanning three. Burke threw 53 pitches, 30 for strikes.
Burke, who helped the Pioneers to a Super 8 Division 1A State Championship in 2017, made 16 starts for Charlotte this season, posting a 4.62 ERA. The 6-foot-6 Burke recorded a 31% strikeout rate and has a fastball that has hit 97 mph. Burke was expected to pitch out of the Chicago bullpen, but could get a start on Sunday.

Burke was picked 94th overall in the 2021 Major League Baseball Draft after a successful career at the University of Maryland. Burke, who underwent Tommy John surgery in 2018, was 6-3 in 13 starts for the Terps in 2021. He missed much of the 2023 season with shoulder soreness, but came back strong for the Knights since he was activated on May 31.

Burke starred on the baseball and basketball teams for St. John's, and was a two-time T&G Super Team selection in baseball after going a combined 7-1 in his final two seasons for the Pioneers, boasting ERAs of 0.44 and 0.36 in his junior and senior seasons. He also was a key piece of the St. John's basketball team that reached the Division 1 state final in 2016.
