Chick-Fil-A, Sbarro among 8 restaurants with 309 rodent droppings in a South Florida mall

Rodents roamed restaurants at a Wellington mall and marked their territory, a fact revealed by state inspections that closed eight places with rodent droppings.

Nine restaurants at The Mall at Wellington Green, 10300 Forest Hill Blvd., were shut down by inspection on Sept. 18 and 19, all but one including the High Priority violation of “rodent activity present as evidenced by rodent droppings found.” Seven of those restaurants have other violations, but rodent dung almost guarantees inspection failure from state inspectors working in Broward and Palm Beach County.

All but one of the rodent poop-riddled restaurants managed to pass the callback inspection the next day.

“Upon notification of these infractions, we worked with our tenants to immediately take steps to remedy the situation, and upon re-inspection, the food court re-opened within 24 hours,” said Asad Sadiq, the mall’s general manager. “We will continue to work with our tenants to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all The Mall at Wellington Green patrons.”

Here are the restaurants and their rodent counts:

California Pizza Kitchen

“Approximately 100 rodent droppings in the kitchen on the floor of the dry storage area.

Chick-Fil-A

“Approximately nine rodent droppings at the front counter where open and exposed single service food items are stored under the soda station.”

The Madres

“Ten rodent droppings on the floor below food and single service items. At dishwashing/water heater area, approximately 30 rodent droppings on the floor and on the water heater.”

The next day, The Madres failed re-inspection when the inspector saw three rodent droppings on the cookline floor and four on the dishwashing area floor.

Mediterranean Plate

The inspector saw “25 rodent droppings in the kitchen, outside the walk-in freezer,” and “15 rodent droppings in the kitchen around the water heater.”

Nativus

“Approximately 15 rodent droppings on the floor near front counter.” Also, in that area, “approximately three rodent droppings on the bottom shelf under a cash register...front counter area has sodas, waffles, and a coffee machine.”

Sbarro

Near the back prep area and across from the walk-in cooler, the inspector saw approximately 35 rodent droppings under a food storage shelf with canned foods and single service items; about 15 rodent droppings in an empty storage container on the food storage shelf; and, about 30 rodent droppings around the water heater between the food shelves.
