Chloe Fineman warns “Saturday Night Live ”newbies that their first season is like being 'thrown into the fire'

Her advice for surviving the season? "Have fun."

New cast members of Saturday Night Live should be able to handle the heat — at least according to veteran ensemble resident Chloe Fineman.

The comedian, who is currently gearing up to begin her sixth season on the sketch comedy show, was recently asked by PEOPLE to offer some words of wisdom to the show’s newest jokesters, and her message was fairly simple.

“Have fun,” Fineman said, adding, “You kind of are, like, thrown into the fire.”

Fineman learned this lesson the hard way when she joined the show in 2019. She opened up to Variety about a particularly challenging night from her first season, in which she didn’t know anything was wrong until an SNL legend offered some advice.

“My first year, Will Ferrell hosted,” Fineman recalled. “I thought I did fine. Turns out I bombed the hardest I’ve ever bombed. At the end, he was like, ‘Hang in there. It gets better.’”

As SNL approaches the fall premiere of its historic 50th season, a new set of comedians will be embracing the challenges of their own debut season. The newbies in question are former Groundlings member Ashley Padilla, stand-up alum Emil Wakim, and TikToker Jane Wickline.

SNL had even more shakeups to its ensemble earlier this month as Molly Kearney and Punkie Johnson departed after two and four seasons respectively. Featured player Chloe Troast is also leaving after just one season.

"Unfortunately I was not asked back to SNL this season," Troast wrote in a Sept. 9 Instagram post. "I wish I was going back to be with all the amazing friends I made there. It truly felt like home. But it wasn't in the cards."

While Troast has exited the show, her fellow season 49 featured newbies, Marcello Hernandez, Michael Longfellow and Devon Walker, are all being promoted to the main cast. The rest of season 49's featured players will be returning as well, including Fineman, Michael Che, Mikey Day, Ego Nwodim, Kenan Thompson, Bowen Yang, James Austin Johnson, Andrew Dismukes, Heidi Gardner, Colin Jost, and Sarah Sherman. Maya Rudolph is also anticipated to reprise her Emmy-winning Kamala Harris impersonation throughout the election season.
