Cleveland Browns notes: Wyatt Teller welcomes new baby daughter as new season nears

BEREA — Wyatt Teller will welcome a new season when the Browns open with the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. The Pro Bowl right guard already had another welcome to make last week.

Teller and his wife, Carly, welcomed a daughter, Virginia Austin, on Friday morning. She's the couple's second child, joining son Brooks, who'll be 2 years old in December.

“We're going to call her Gigi," Teller said Monday. "She was born Friday morning. It was awesome. Seven pounds, 12 ounces, 19-and-a-half inches long. So, healthy girl."

Teller said everyone is healthy, but there have been some reinforcements brought in to help the couple make sure they can at least grab a few hours of sleep.

"Mama's doing well, she's doing well and we've gotten people to help," Teller said. "Her mom's in town to help with stuff, but also a night doula and stuff like that to make sure that I can sleep and mama can sleep, too.”

Tyler Huntley's return to Baltimore Ravens: 'It happens'

The Browns had Tyler Huntley in their quarterback room from mid-March until the end of August. Then, after they released him near the end of last week, he returned to his former team, the Baltimore Ravens, on their practice squad.

That would be the Browns' AFC North rival Baltimore Ravens, a team they'll play twice during the regular season. Assistant general manager/Vice President of Player Personnel Glenn Cook dismissed any real concern over Huntley landing back with the Ravens, a team with which he spent the first four years of his career.

"Yeah, I think it's just a part of what we do, right?" Cook said Monday. "You're constantly adding and removing players from the roster, and sometimes they go to division foe, sometimes they go to your next opponent or an opponent you play in three weeks. So it happens. We wish Snoop the best. It's a familiar place for him and, again, you never know. He could be back."

The Browns and Ravens won't play for the first time this season until Oct. 27, the eighth game of the season. The second matchup, meanwhile, won't come until the regular-season finale.

By the time they play for the first time, the Browns will have already put seven games' worth of film out of their new offense. That's seven games' worth of film for the Ravens to break down.

DTR's been dynamite, but 'stay tuned' about depth-chart spot

The quarterback who beat out Huntley to remain on the Browns roster is Dorian Thompson-Robinson. The conventional wisdom was that the two were fighting it out for the No. 3 quarterback spot behind starter Deshaun Watson and backup Jameis Winston.

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski would only say, "Stay tuned" last Thursday when asked if Thompson-Robinson had played his way potentially into the backup role. Was that the coach being coy or the coach being a comic?

"Stay tuned," Cook said. "No, I say, look, DTR, he played a couple games last year as a rookie, which is tough for any rookie, and I think seeing him since May and the development and evolution of his game, that's what you want to see, right? Regardless of right now where he is on the depth chart, the growth that he's made on the football field, we’re excited about that. Very excited about that to be honest. So, again, you’ve got to stay tuned on the other part with [Stefanski], I don't have that answer."

Thompson-Robinson, who had a season-ending hip injury last December, had arguably the best preseason of the four quarterbacks. It was a substantial sign of growth in the second-year player out of UCLA who started three games as a rookie for the Browns.

Cleveland Browns continue to avoid comment on Mike Hall Jr. situation

Former Streetsboro High School and Ohio State defensive tackle Mike Hall Jr., the Browns' second-round pick in April's draft, remains on the commissioner's exempt list as the team enters the week of the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys. That move, made by the league office, was while they continue to investigate potential personal conduct policy violations from his Aug. 13 domestic violence arrest.

There's no timetable for when Hall could return to the active roster. Cook was the latest Browns executive or coach, though, to dodge a question about the 21-year-old rookie since his arrest.

"Yeah, Mike's working through what he needs to work through being on the commissioner exempt list," Cook said, "and so he’ll continue to do that. I probably won't say much more on Mike at the moment."

Nick Chubb 'working hard,' but no set timeline back from PUP list

Running back Nick Chubb's season won't start any earlier than Week 5 at the Washington Commanders. That's the earliest it can start after the Browns placed him on the reserve/physically unable to perform list a week ago as he continues to rehab from the knee injury he suffered nearly a year ago.

There was some hope at the start of training camp that, maybe, Chubb could find his way back onto the field in the season's first month. Cook wouldn't say if that included the Browns themselves.

"He's working hard, man," Cook said. "I think we've seen it since Greenbrier. If anyone was pushing to be ready Week 1 it’s definitely Nick, and I know he's scratching the itching to get out there, so just whenever he's ready we'll be ready and accepting of him helping us put up points on offense. But the staff and coach and the medical group will do us right and I feel good in that."
