Colin Firth joins Prime Video's new Sherlock Holmes show

Colin Firth is joining the cast of upcoming Prime Video series Young Sherlock.

The Oscar-winning actor will play a character called Sir Bucephalus Hodge in the new show based on the Young Sherlock Holmes novels by author Andy Lane (per Variety).

After's Hero Fiennes Tiffin plays the titular role in the series which was announced in May, with previously-announced cast members including Joseph Fiennes, Natascha McElhone and Zine Tseng.

"At age 19, Sherlock Holmes is disgraced, raw, unfiltered, and unformed, when he finds himself caught up in a murder mystery at Oxford University which threatens his freedom," teases the show's official synopsis.

"Diving into his first-ever case with a wild lack of discipline, Sherlock manages to unravel a globe-trotting conspiracy that will change his life forever."

Further details of what's in store for Firth's character is currently being kept under wraps.

The Gentlemen's Guy Ritchie is directing and executive producing Young Sherlock, with Matthew Parkhill signed on as writer, executive producer, and showrunner.

Firth's last TV appearance was in the 2022 HBO Max limited series The Staircase, where he played real-life author Michael Peterson, who was accused of murdering his wife Kathleen. The King's Speech star appeared alongside Toni Colette in the eight-part series.

In addition to Young Sherlock, Firth is confirmed to star in an upcoming Sky drama about the Lockerbie bombing incident.

The five-part series recalls the events of the 1988 disaster which saw an aeroplane explode over the town of Lockerbie in Scotland, killing all 259 people on board and 11 local residents.

Firth plays Dr Jim Swire in the show, a bereaved father whose daughter Flora was killed in the terror attack. Swire risks everything to honour the memory of his daughter and seek justice for the tragedy.

Young Sherlock currently has no release date.
