COSI has become the latest attraction to partner with Columbus City Council to help keep city residents cool, safe and entertained as extreme and potentially dangerous heat settles into central Ohio.

City council announced Tuesday night that the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) is offering free general admission Thursday for the first 2,000 residents after it opens at 10 a.m. Thursday. The free admission does not include the special Titanic Artifact Exhibition, the Motion Simulator or for parking to go to COSI at 333 W. Broad St.

COSI is the second local attraction to partner with the council to offer free tickets during the heat wave.

Gateway Film Center, 1550 N. High St., is offering two days of free movies for city residents looking to escape the heat. The movie tickets will include popcorn and soda, according to a City Council news release.

The free movies will be available Wednesday and Thursday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Attendees will be able to choose from the following films while tickets are available:

  • Tuesday (2024)

  • The Bad Guys (2022)

  • Jurassic Park (1993) 4K Restoration

  • Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024)

  • Matilda (1996)

  • The Fall Guy (2024)

  • Shrek (2001)

  • The Grab (2024) - Wednesday Only

  • Resistance: They Fought Back (2024) - Wednesday Only

"Extreme weather events are becoming more common; from this week's potentially record-breaking heat to the tornadoes and severe storms we've been experiencing," said Councilmember Christopher Wyche. "That's why Council is working with city departments and community partners to support our residents through multiple channels during this heat wave."

In addition to the free admission events being offered to Columbus residents, there will also be cooling centers opened throughout the week at Columbus Recreation and Parks centers and Columbus Metropolitan Library locations to help people cool off.
