Crash report reveals more information about men's escape from Augusta Transitional Center

More details have been released about the two men who escaped from the Augusta Transitional Center Wednesday night.

George Richard Carter Jr., 58, and Matthew Connelly, 30, allegedly walked away from a Augusta Transitional Center work detail, escaping after stealing a Toyota Tacoma registered to Motivational Landscaping, according to previous reporting.

Columbia County Sheriff's Office deputies received a license plate recognition alert for the stolen truck Thursday morning and spotted it traveling east on Washington Road at Davis Road, The Chronicle reported.

Deputies followed the truck to Shartom Drive in Richmond County, where additional Columbia County Sheriff's Office, Richmond County Sheriff's Office and U.S. Marshal's Service units met and arrested the men, according to previous reporting.

During the encounter with law enforcement, Carter allegedly shifted the truck into reverse and it rolled into the front of a Columbia County deputy's patrol vehicle, according to the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.

A Richmond County Sheriff's Office crash report notes Carter was responsible for the damage to the front of the patrol car, caused by the trailer hitch on the back of the truck.

Carter is serving 10 years for burglary out of Clayton County with a maximum release date of October 2025, according to officials with the Georgia Department of Corrections. He has been incarcerated by the GDOC 10 times, beginning in 1986.

Connelly is serving five years for aggravated battery out of Bulloch County with a maximum release date of July 2026, according to the department of corrections.

It is unclear if the men will face additional charges in connection to the theft and escape.
