Crochet classes offer creativity, confidence for the month of June

Crystal Bridgewater is hosting a crochet class that will engage and be a hands-on series to unlock your creativity and confidence.

The goal is to master the art of crocheting. By the end of the four-week class, participants will be able to create fun and innovate designs.

Classes began at 6:30 p.m. June 6 at 6:30 at the Power Gem, 2811 Kaliste Saloom Rd B. Classes will be every Thursday until the end of June.

Since the age of 10, Bridgewater said she has been crocheting and owns her own business called Crochet Me This, started in 2015.

“When I first started crocheting, it wasn’t really trendy,” she said. “It was mostly thought of as something old people did. But ever since, the craft has really caught on with others and has since become a trendy pastime.

“It’s everywhere and everyone wants to know how to do it. I’ve been asked multiple times if I teach a crochet class.”

The month-long crochet class is for ages 6 and up. Bridgewater said participants will learn basic stitches, different crocheting techniques, how to work with different yarn sizes and textures and how to read patterns.

“We will create projects in class and crochet projects for ‘homework,’” Bridgewater said. “I will also host live crochet-a-longs for the students to join and crochet with me outside of the classroom.”

So, why a crochet class? Bridgewater said they are meant to have a good time. She said she hopes it can create a positive mindset and patience. As a person who does it on a regular basis, Bridgewater calls it therapeutic.

She loves getting lost in the work, forgetting about the rigorousness of life in the moment. She hopes it can do the same for others.

“I'm able to watch a single piece of yarn become a masterpiece on stitch at a time,” Bridgewater said. “I want others to get this same type of peace.”

Bridgewater said she is excited and is looking forward to teaching others.
