D-derby to Latino heritage or book festivals, something for everyone in Kitsap this fall

D-Derby championships: The season of crashing and smashing wraps up at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds, with championship on tap including the annual mini-car open and big car open. Tickets are $22, or $20 for students, seniors and military, or an $85 family pass, available online or at the gate.Saturday, Sept. 14, starting at 5 p.m.

Latino festival: A new event to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month arrives at North Kitsap High School, with food, dancing, music and more activities. Saturday, Sept. 14, from 1 to 4 p.m.

Bainbridge Quilt Festival: Come browse the Winslow Green lawn decked out with more than 200 quilts. Participants vote on the best examples to take home the annual awards, and and attendees can also take home a quilt through a raffle, with tickets only $2. Saturday, Sept. 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Bainbridge Record Show: Meet with fellow music lovers to bowse through extensive collections of vinyl in all genres, as well as CDs and tapes, music memorabilia and more. Tickets are $5 (or $10 to get in an hour early) for the event at 764 Winslow Way E., just up from the Bainbridge ferry terminal. Saturday, Sept. 14, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

New era for Kitsap Opera: The longtime local opera company has shifted to new leadership and landed resident company status in partnership with Bremerton's Admiral Theatre. The first production, "Cinderella (Rossini’s La Cenerentola)," opens this month at the Admiral, and tickets are available at www.kitsapopera.org. Friday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m., and Sunday, Sept. 22 at 3:30 p.m.

Bridging Bremerton: The community walk that loops across the Manette and Warren Avenue bridges in Bremerton, led by the event's founder, former Kitsap Sun reporter Josh Farley, returns this year for a tour full of history and updates beginning at Bremerton's Evergreen-Rotary Park. Join the walk, see artists at work at the Manette Graffiti Wall on the course, and finish with a pizza and paella party at Evergreen Pizza. Saturday, Sept. 21, starting at 10 a.m.

Latin American Heritage Festival: This inaugural event at Olympic College features art, music, dancing, food, activities for kids and more, organized by the We Are Better Together Foundation and OC's Latino Youth Coalition to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and various Latin American Independence Days. On the Olympic College Bremerton campus, from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28

Washington State Toy Show: There's something for nearly every toy collector -- vintage to modern, action figures to LEGOs and video games -- at the traveling showcase being held for the first time in Kitsap County. General admission to the event at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds Pavilion is $5 (with an early bird entry for $10) and kids under 12 are free. Saturday, Sept. 28, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Bainbridge Book Festival: Fans of romance, fiction, memoir, history and horror, and likely far more beyond those genres, will find books, authors appearances and signings and panel discussions at the inaugural Bainbridge Book Festival, held at the Stan Pocock Rowing Center and Bainbridge Island Senior Center, neighboring venues on the Winslow Green and within walking distance of the island ferry terminal. A ticketed event with a keynote speaker opens the event on Friday, with free sessions through the day Saturday. Friday, Oct. 4 and Saturday, Oct. 5

Poulsbo Beer Run: Make it an active Oktoberfest with six of the north end's best breweries and cider makers -- but you gotta earn it. The annual Poulsbo Beer Run is back for runners to tour and taste in a single activity, with starting points at Slippery Pig, Valholl, Western Red, Echoes, Envy and Bushel and Barrel Ciderhouse. Register before Sept. 26 at poulsbobeerrun.com. Saturday, Oct. 5

Kitsap Color Classic: The annual fall bicycle ride that draws participants from Kitsap and beyond to tour the autumn scenery of North Kitsap launches from the Kingston ferry terminal, with three different rides to pick from. More information, routes and registration is available through the Cascade Bicycle Club. Sunday, Oct. 6, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Poulsbo Film Festival: The three-day event that includes independent works that range from documentary to horror shorts and feature films, along Q&A sessions with filmmakers and fun on Front Street, returns for its third edition. Buy tickets now at www.poulsbofilmfestival.com and keep an eye out for the full schedule to be released soon. Friday, Oct. 11 to Sunday, Oct. 13

Poulsbo Kids Book Festival: Authors and illustrators of children's books are scheduled to visit schools in Kitsap County and then gather for a community book fair, the first of its kind in North Kitsap. A "Hall of Authors and Illustrators" is planned for the Sons of Norway Hall on Front Street, with opportunities to see new books, visit with creators and do other kids' activities from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. More info is available at poulsbokidsbookfest.com.
