Who is David Ross? Former Reds player managed Cubs from 2020 to 2023

When the Cincinnati Redsfired manager David Bell with one week left in his sixth season as the team's skipper, David Ross' name was among those most suggested as a potential replacement.

Ross, who played for the Reds from 2006 to 2008, has MLB managerial experience with the Reds' National League Central rival Chicago Cubs from 2020 to 2023.

What to know about Ross, who also played for the Cubs and was nicknamed "Grandpa Rossy" by Chicago teammates:

Ross played more games for the Reds than any other team.

Ross played 15 MLB seasons, for the Reds, Cubs, Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, San Diego Padres and Pittsburgh Pirates.

He played in 254 games over three seasons for the Reds. He played in 227 games over four seasons with Atlanta.

The two other teams for which he played more than 100 games were the Cubs (139) and the Dodgers (118).

During his time with Cincinnati, Ross batted .227 with 41 homers and 104 RBIs.

Ross' first career ejection as manager was against the Reds.

Bell was ejected from the same game.

When the Reds and Cubs met at Great American Ball Park in 2020, Reds starting pitcher Tejay Antone threw a fastball over Anthony Rizzo's head.

Ross and the Cubs' bench took exception. Umpires issued warnings to both benches. Ross and Cubs catching coach Mike Borzello were ejected for arguing with umpires.

Cubs reliever Adbert Alzolay threw a high fastball to Shogo Akiyama. Players exchanged words from both dugouts. Bell went onto the field to chat with umpires, and Rizzo told Bell the delay was taking too long. When benches cleared, Bell, Joey Votto and Jesse Winker were ejected.

Ross said after the game that Antone intentionally threw at Rizzo. Antone and Bell said Antone would never throw at Rizzo's head.

David Ross' record as the Cubs' manager was 262-284.

Ross became the Cubs' manager before the 2020 season. The team was 34-26 in that abbreviated season. The Cubs lost 2-0 in their 2020 Wild card series against the Marlins. It was the only time the Cubs went to the postseason under Ross.

The Cubs were 71-91 in 2021; 74-88 in 2022; and 83-79 in 2023.

Ross was 39 when he caught his first and only career no-hitter, against the Reds in 2016.

Jake Arrieta no-hit the Reds in a 16-0 Cubs win in April 2016, with Ross behind the plate.

It was the final season of Ross' playing career.
