Des Moines police identify 21-year-old man who was killed in Sunday shooting

The Des Moines Police Department identified the man who was killed in a shooting on Sunday as 21-year-old Tariq Reynolds.

Martavius Lamon Green, 19, was charged with first-degree murder in Reynold's death, which happened in a south side neighborhood, police said in a news release.

The release said Green was a guest in a home at 3400 S. Union St. when he got involved in an argument there. "That argument became physical and the 21-year-old victim intervened," the release said.

Green of Atlanta, Georgia, had left the property, returned and allegedly shot Reynolds two times in the upper torso with a 9mm gun, according to court documents.

Officers found a firearm located near Green when he tried to hide from police officers, the court documents said. Green allegedly admitted it was the gun used to shoot Reynolds.

Police said they received a report of the shooting about 1:40 p.m. Sunday. Reynolds was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Polk County Jail records indicate Green is being held on no bond.

The killing was the eighth homicide of 2024 in Des Moines.
